As a member of the leadership team, the Director of Safety will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing global safety programs primarily in the areas of construction safety and design safety. Some involvement and leadership will be required in the area of process safety in collaboration with the Corporate and Safety and Environmental Services resources.
This position reports to the Vice President, Global Operations Excellence and Development. This position has direct reports.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Global leadership and sharing of safety best practices across all regions.
- Development and implementation of processes to ensure continuous improvement of design, construction and operating hazards (and involvement in process hazard prevention programs and requirements) in the engineering/design phases of project work.
- Central review and oversight of all safety activities to ensure consistency and quality.

- Responsible for the identification of applicable externally imposed safety/health standards and establishes procedures for their implementation.
- Leads internal safety audits/assessments for region execution centers or engineering teams and provides assistance in implementing needed changes in order to achieve acceptable results.
- Conducts accident investigations including Root Cause Analysis
of Injuries, Illnesses and Key Incidents.
- Instigates corrective actions following citations or safety incidents.
- Ensures compliance with occupational and health regulations.
- Provides effective leadership to direct reports through training, coaching, career planning and performance management.
The position requires global travel of over 25%.
Education: Bachelor's Degree required.
Experience:
- 10+ years Safety/Environment experience in chemical related industry required.
- Chemical process industry preferred, but other industry or construction experience will be strongly considered. Retail or light industry is not acceptable.

This position is located South of Houston. This is a chemical manufacturer and they will relocate someone. This position reports to the EHS manager. Preference would be for a chemical engineer by degree, but will obviously consider any safety related degree with PSM experience. This is not a management position but it is a higher level position. Our firm is a third generation family owned bridge and marine contractor headquartered in the Southeastern United States. In business for over 75 years, the company works mainly in the Southeast. We perform work for both government and private entities and specialize in projects which involve a high degree of engineering and difficulty of construction as well as emergency response projects for railroads in particular. We employ approximately 275 people and normally have 10 to 12 projects in progress at any one time.
We are looking for people who want to make a long term commitment to our company. Some of our employees have been with us for 50 years plus. We value loyalty and a willingness to get the job done and done right the first time. Our turnover rate at the management level is very low.
The person we are looking for will be experienced in construction safety with experience in bridge, marine or heavy construction a plus. Ideally this person would be fluent in Spanish as we have a good number of Hispanic employees. Specific duties would include but not be limited to:
- Overall management of the company safety program.
- Restructuring and writing a new safety manual/program for the company.
- Jobsite safety audits and inspections. Our work area is the Southeastern U.S. and this manager would be expected to visit most jobs at least twice monthly.
- Work with project managers and supervisory personnel to develop Job Safety Analysis for specific projects and operations within the project.
- Investigate any injuries, near misses, or equipment damage and determine actions that need to be taken to prevent reoccurrence.
- Establish, maintain and coordinate safety training with office and jobsite personnel.
- Work with estimators in bidding projects to make sure any special costs of safety compliance are included in bid.

Safety Manager (1/6/10)
Job Purpose: Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of safety and security programs for assigned Distribution Center. Oversees training and certification of associates and ensures associates are provided with ongoing skills development and coaching to improve their secure and safe work habits. Develops the operating plan and budget for the Safety and Security Department and is accountable for achieving overall results that are consistent with individual and company performance goals.
Initial Minimum Qualifications:
- 4-Year College degree and/or a minimum of eight years work experience in retail operations, distribution, transportation, logistics and/or supply chain, security and safety management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive experience and skill in retail distribution processes, logistics, supply chain management, warehouse operations, transportation, security and safety management.
- Strong leadership skills including team facilitation, training, and motivation.
- Strong analytical, organizational and investigative skills.
- Working knowledge of operational analysis.
- Good PC skills including experience using Windows, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, email and other software applications.
- Adept at preparing and delivering an address or presentation in a business setting
- Able to communicate complex and detailed information verbally via telephone, in person, and in writing.
- Able to handle multiple tasks, organize, and coordinate activities effectively in complex situations
Primary (Essential) Job Functions:
- Creates high customer service and productivity expectations among associates, monitors individual and team performance, and takes action to correct performance gaps and/or address improvement opportunities.
- Assesses daily and weekly work habits, identifies trends in vehicle and workers compensation accidents, and directs the allocation of people and Best Safety Practices to address identified issues at assigned Distribution Center.
- Accountable for maintaining a safe and secure environment for associates and visitors at the assigned Distribution Center in accordance with company policies and health and safety regulations.
- Reviews and evaluates performance of all functions, addresses performance gaps, and takes corrective action, as needed, to ensure that the warehouses and transportation teams are delivering on safety and security goals.
- Assesses business conditions, evaluates business needs and takes action to address opportunities to improve service, reduce costs, and enhance safety and security results of assigned Distribution Center.
- Has a good working knowledge of all physical security systems to include CCTV, alarm and fire protection systems. Consistently uses these tools to detect, investigate and resolve problems associated with acts of dishonesty, safety, or exposure to loss.

Responsibilities:
- Identifies high hazard processes, activities, conditions and leads efforts with site staff.
- Conducts developmental training with Plant staff regarding auditing and inspection skills, safety engineering design aspects and safety/supervisory leadership.
- Develops and leads program development in areas such as ergonomics, electrostatics and observation program, etc.
- Responsible for training program, including regulatory required training and Company required training, i.e. hot work, confined space entry, entry, emergency preparedness, ergonomics.
- Develop and audit program, procedures and personnel with site element owner to have strong contractor safety program.
- Conducts environmental and safety reviews on new projects, both capital and non capital.
- Develop and audit overall site spill prevention program. Instill prevention into behavior, operations and design.
- Supervise Industrial Hygiene program.
- Lead efforts to ensure HSE regulatory compliance.
- Manage Annual Self Assessment Process.
- Driver of projects (capital, error proofing, etc.) to reduce waste and solvent wash.
Qualifications:
- Degreed in Safety or Engineering disciplines, OR proven equivalent education experience.
- 10+ years substantial HSE experience, preferably in Chemical Manufacturing.
- Proven PSM practitioner, strong PSM knowledge and skill, results.
- Proven record of accomplishments, i.e. development of site programs and employees that prevent and control hazards.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in behavioral cultural changes.
- Green Belt, preferred
- Demonstrated command of applicable HSE regulations.
- Strong communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills.
